Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a native deciduous shrub or small tree that may grow 15 to 20 feet tall. It will grow in full sun to partial shade, though the best flowering is in full sun locations. It likes moist, acidic, organically rich and well draining soil. The leaves of this shrub turn an attractive yellow color in the fall. It blooms anywhere from September through December with yellow spidery blooms that brighten a dreary winter garden.

Flowers are pollinated by moths. Wild turkeys eat the seeds. Fruit is eaten by small mammals and songbirds. It is moderately resistant to browsing by deer.
