Red Columbine (Aquilegia canandensis) is an erect, branching perennial with delicate ferny foliage and showy red and yellow flowers that bloom in late winter through early July. Plants usually grow to a height of 3- to 4-feet and a spread of 1 foot. It does well in dry, alkaline, sandy, well-drained, poor quality soil and partial or full shade. It will spread by self-seeding and may double in two years. Full sun may burn its leaves and stunt its growth. Do not over-water in the summer. Columbine may go dormant in mid summer, but will emerge again in late winter.

Blooms attract Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and hawk moths. Seeds consumed by finches. It is deer resistant.
