Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scopolarium) is a perennial, warm-season clump-forming 3- to 4-foot grass. The leaves and stems frequently have a bluish cast in summer, while the fall color is a very warm copper that does not fade throughout winter. Its leaves are larval food for butterflies and its seeds provide food for birds like Dark-eyed Juncos, as well as Chipping, Field, Song, White-throated, and Tree Sparrow and winter cover for many small birds. Little bluestem provides necessary overwintering habitat and resources for many insects and birds. Female bumble bee queens nest at the base of bunch grasses, like little bluestem, where they are protected until they emerge in the Spring.

Coming in May.
