Groundsel tree (Baccharis halimifolia) is a multi-trunked shrub with a unique foliage and flowering season. The thick foliage is covered with a white waxy layer, making it appear grey. The fall-flowering female plants with their densely silver-green aspect are beautiful when few other plants are blooming. Groundsel tree is dioecious: a male pollinator plant is needed for female fruit set. It will grow to a height of 5 to 10 feet in partial shade and wet soil.

Groundsel tree provides cover and nesting habitat for various species of birds. Bees and small butterflies use the abundant nectar from the male flowers, which in turn attract songbirds to forage on the insects. Granivorous birds will eat the seeds.
