Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida) is a hardy, erect perennial that that grows 2 to 3 feet tall. It produces numerous yellow daisy-like flowers with a dark center mature from August into the fall. The seeds are favorites of AmericanGoldfinches and other songbirds. Black-eyed Susan does best in full sun but tolerates partial shade and the hot humid weather of summer. The plant spreads by rhizomes to form large clumps which can be divided in spring or fall. It is the larval host for wavy-lined emerald moth (Synchlora aerata) and the State listed silvery checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis). Songbirds, especially American goldfinches, eat the seeds in the fall.
