Second Biodiversity Day Will Take Place in Guilford

Menunkatuck Audubon Society's second Biodiversity Day will be here shortly. For 24 hours beginning Friday, September 7, experts and students from throughout Connecticut will converge on Guilford to search out and record the various life forms in the principal habitats of the town. Their findings can provide the raw material for an evaluation of the health and vitality of the area's different ecosystems, and provide a benchmark against which to measure future changes either positive or negative.

Specialists in the following fields will attend: entomology, mycology, botany, ichthyology, ornithology, dendrology, herpetology, and lepidoptery. More than 75 well known scientists, naturalists and their students will assist in this extensive study of most, if not all, of Guilford's numerous ecosystems. Because of the complex interrelationships within a balanced ecosystem, teams of experts from each field will closely examine each site and record their findings. Some of the data, specimens, and observations will be further assessed in off-site labs.

The headquarters for the event will be at the Dudley Farm on Durham Road in North Guilford. Meals and drinks will be available to the participants. A temporary lab will be set up in one of the outbuildings.

A summary report of all findings will be published and made available to participants and interested individuals and institutions in Guilford and elsewhere. Results should be of particular interest to the Guilford Land Conversation Trust, the Guilford Conservation Commission, and other environmental organizations.

Volunteers assisting MAS members are from the Guilford Conservation Commission, the Guilford Land Conservation Trust, National Audubon, the Regional Water Authority, and the Dudley Farm. The Coastal Camera Club will cover the event. Funding for Biodiversity Day is provided by the Audubon Council of Connecticut , the Guilford Conservation Commission, the Guilford Garden Club , the Guilford Land Conservation Trust , and Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale (from the carousel), and the Jane Marcher Foundation.
