King/Robinson

Menunkatuck Audubon Society has adopted King/Robinson Inter-district Mag¬net School in New Haven. King/Robinson is a PK-8 International Baccalaureate school with the mission “… for students to obtain an international perspective of other cultures, languages, religions and priorities as they learn how to explore and to make positive connections to improve themselves, their family, their community and their society.” Menunkatuck is supporting the seventh and eighth grade science programs that teach the children about their connection to the natural world.

King/Robinson is located adjacent to Beaver Pond Park in northern New Haven and the science classroom overlooks one of the ponds for which the park is named. The pond teems with fish and has resident Great Blue Herons and visiting mergansers and other ducks. A groundhog wandered along the pond edge early in March. A Red-tailed Hawk flies past the science classroom windows.

Menunkatuck Board member Dorothy Holabird donated a spotting scope to the school, Treasurer Connie Mortensen donated binoculars, and Menunkatuck purchased a tripod and two binoculars. The students are eager to use the optics to scan the pond and its edges for birds, turtles, and other visitors. They are fervently waiting for the weather to warm so that dragonflies will be seen.
