Osbornedale State Park
Osbornedale State Park is situated near the confluence of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers in Derby and Ansonia, CT. The property was donated to the state of CT by Mrs. Francis Osborne Kellogg, a Naugatuck Valley businesswoman who over the course of her lifetime acquired various pieces of woodlands and farmlands that make up the park as we see it today.
The 350 acre park contains a variety of habitats including wooded uplands, meadows, large and small ponds and wetlands that provide habitat for migrating and resident birds year-round. Several miles of trails traverse the park’s varied habitats, providing birdwatching opportunities in all areas of the park. During spring and fall migration numerous species of warblers and other migrants can be spotted, and in summer the park provides breeding habitats for numerous species including bluebirds, orioles, vireos and warblers. The meadows located around the park also attract many different species of butterflies, dragonflies and other insects as well.
The adjacent Kellogg Environmental Center and Osborne Homestead Museum can offer visitors informa- tion and educational programs, in addition to having some good birding spots as well. The well-tended flower gardens and grounds outside the Osborne Homestead Museum are a great spot to look for butterflies and dragonflies in the summer, in addition to birds.
