The Wonders and Perils of Spring Bird Migration in the Northeast

It's peak spring bird migration in the Northeast! For World Migratory Bird Day (May 11), join us for a special webinar exploring the incredible journeys that migratory birds make every spring to our region, with a focus on warblers and thrushes. You'll learn what kinds of neotropical birds migrate through our region and answers to questions like, where are they going, why do they fly so far, and how does the springtime eruption of insects, pollen, and sap affect the timing of their migration?

Woven into this narrative will be the story of some of the different perils that birds face during migration and the simple steps you can take at your home or business to help them reach their destinations safely. You'll also hear about new bird-friendly building laws being passed in the Northeast to help protect nocturnal songbird migrants.

Presented by Meredith Barges, Co-Chair of Lights Out Connecticut, bird-friendly building advocate, and former policy researcher at the Yale Bird-Friendly Building Initiative. Through her work, Meredith helps people to understand and appreciate the complex lives of birds, how birds interact with the built environment, and how our decisions about buildings, lighting, and landscaping affect bird populations. She helped to lead the successful campaign to pass Connecticut's new lights out law, Public Act 23-143, in 2023. She also co-authored Building Safer Cities for Birds: How Cities Are Leading the Way on Bird-Friendly Building Policy (American Bird Conservancy & Yale Law School, 2023).
